Thanks for starting that thread mike!    (Or continuing it?)...really 
fascinating reading
from that 80 year young irisarian!
     Earliest iris I remember and yes, from my mom's garden, was the purple 
bitone
that is probably related to the bitone purple I have now.   Got mine from my 
first house where a huge clump lay waiting to be divided.   I brought some 
here to this, the third house we've moved to, because I told my girls that it 
was something from the house/property we had when they were born.    My 
interest in iris wasn't active when we moved from the house where I was born, 
so I have none of the original iris my mom grew.    But I did grab some of 
the unnamed ones she has growing at her current residence,  since she's 
moving AGAIN.    I believe she also grew one that looked alot like EDITH 
WOLFORD, although it couldn't have been EW as long ago as THAT was.   
     Not a fascinating contribution but I love to hear how people first 
caught this iris bug.    Look forward to everyone's stories...
