Re: HIST: First Iris

I don't remember how old I was when I was bitten by the iris bug, but
I was very young. (3 or 4 years old, I would guess. It was definately
before I started kindergarten.) My Gramma brought me a few iris
rhizomes, some scarlet-red monarda, and some yellow primroses for me
out of her garden. I was thrilled - I had my VERY OWN flowers! I was
very proud of all of them, but I loved the iris the best. One was a
very pretty, light blue/periwinkle-ish self with a lemon yellow
beard, and the other had golden-yellow standards and maroon falls. I
remember checking them first thing every morning during the blooming
season to see how they were doing. I was so proud of them!
Our house was burned down several years later, and I was terrified
that my precious iris had been killed by the fire, as they were
growing along the foundation of the house. I insisted we at least
look for them, and we found them! (Unfortunately, the monarda and
primroses were lost.) They come with us in a box, charred and smokey,
to the new house, where I replanted them and they are still there and
doing beautifully to this day.
Now that I have a house of my own, I am looking forward to moving
some of them there this summer. I am looking forward to filling the
yard with iris, and plan to order several new colors this year. (Just
to show you how bad I've got it, I asked for iris for Christmas, and
my mom gave my some money earmarked for iris!)
