Just spent a wonderful two hours with a father and son visiting from
Korea. Jackson the son spoke fluent english, father did not, lots of
translating went on. They are here in the states or maybe California
for 12 days. The father is a retired landscaper and the son (24 yrs)
has finished his second year of college in Australia, it is mandatory
for all males to spend 4 years in their army (reserves till age 35) and
he has that out of the way now. The father grows mostly siberians, they
had photos of their farm (10 acres if I understood correctly.) He
wanted to know about growing tall bearded and was beside himself with
joy when he looked thru my photo albums because of all the wonderful
colors that their are. He also was interested in moving pollen for new
colors. We do still have some sorry looking bloom out here and we
discussed my procedure for getting new colors. Gordon has been thinning
the show garden so there is a very large trailer loaded with discarded
plants, when the father realized that they were "trash" he wanted to
fill his pockets up!! There growing season is somewhat shorter then
ours and they get many typhoons during the summer months with lots of
rain and flooding. The nearest large city to them is Soeul (sole),
sorry about that spelling boo-boo. The father also collects oil-burning
lamps. We touched very lightly on politics, they mentioned that
thousands of north Koreans are starving to death. Jackson and and his
father warmly invited us to visit their country and mentioned that they
hope to be back here in a few years. I will continue to email with them
and will share info with anyone else who might be interested. Lorraine
in Modesto California, resting!! (catalog is finally at printers).
