Re: CAT: Desert Lullaby

Betty, I don't think the numbers of the Rudolph seedlings represent cross
numbers. They appear to be year of selection ("65") followed by a serial
order of selection within the year. Pink Taffeta has a "65" number and is
registered in 1965 also.

It is possible Keith Keppel or the AIS Library has the Rudolph records and
could speak authoritatively to this, but it appears that Hall, Fay and Rudolph
all used similar systems with the year of selection of the seedling followed
by a number in order of selection. Hall's 42-05, 42-10, 42-07 all bloomed in
1942, for example, the year the first crop of pink irises appeared in his
garden. Several of them were from the same parentage--Golden Eagle x 39-62.

Rudolph's work, especially the premium results Pink Sleigh and Pink Taffeta
appear strongly in most modern pink lines, including Gatty's and Vernon
Wood's. They represent a series of quantum leaps foreward in pink iris
quality through further incorporation of Snow Flurry into pink breeding,
building on that already done by Fay. The pink part of the ancestries for
each all go back to the work of David Hall.
