For tags, I use the colored paper tags on strings from Walmart. Label with Sharpie. Usually get two years' worth out of them - one side each year. I try to start out each breeding season with ~600 tags, just in case it's one of those seasons with success rate <5%.
The colored tags hold up well - white ones do not. The box has 50 bright orange, 50 bright green tags.
Like Tom, I use the Dollar Store notebooks, preferably a new one with a different cover design each year, one with flowers. ;-) Even found one with irises on it one year.
If I use a whole stalk for the same cross, I'll just tag one or two, record dates in notebook.
