Mary Lou,

I have no experience with disbudding in iris to increase the chance
of seed set, but I have used that technique with roses, but to avoid seed pod
abortion, which some varieties would do if multiple seed pods were on one
terminal.

In general, the advice is that stressed plants are more likely to
set seed than happy healthy ones (survival instinct). I have set as many as
three pods on one terminal and "twins" are common for me.

If you try this,
PLESE let us know what your experiences are.

Bill

[iris] HYB: Disbudding for increased fertility

Remembering a chat with Steve
Poole last spring.

He was advocating disbudding (pinks in particular) to
increase
chances of setting a pod. If I'm remembering it correctly, he
said
to remove, early on, all but one bud, a terminal one. That
way, all the
stalk's energy is channeled into it.

With the weather so unpredictable here,
I find this rather risky,
not to mention the mental anguish of pinching out
baby buds on
the best stuff I have.

Any of you have any experience with this?
