Kathy:
To me, Keppel's catalog is the Bible of new irises. No one seems to equal
his accuracy and thoroughness. The descriptions are very well written.
Rot: We have more trouble with botritis rot, which I check for in the early
spring and dig out of all infected rhizomes. Once they're exposed to air
they begin to recover. Every year, though, a couple are too far gone to
rescue. I only see the rare case of bacterial rot in the summer, and so far
have treated it successfully with the same method. (Our air is dry and we
get a lot of sunshine.)
I grow a lot of Blyth's hybrids. I've done some crosses with Witch's Wand.
I am expecting an order from Australia around May 1.

Lowell: welcome to the Iris List or Chat or whatever. We're pretty new, but
picking up steam!
I just received Keith Keppel's catalog and was interested to see that he's
now getting acquainted 'up close and personal' with rot! Rot is a big
problem here (Buffalo, NY area) and I suspect that some of that can be
attributed to our moist climate. Keith uses alot of Blythe's material in his
crosses - and I have learned that those are particularly hard to grow
here....naturally, these are also the ones I lust after! WITCH'S WAND sent
me reeling the first time I saw it, and after melting 3 different plants, I
guess I have to accept that I can't grow it. I DO have WITCHING and it's
growing well so far....but I built a new garden - raised about 18" to 24"
with a steep slope, broken by large rocks here and there...that's where
WITCHING is perched and it seems happy.
So, welcome and I look forward to your postings.
