|Tom, of course your information was correct, but I would like to add an
|aside. The late Howard Shockey pointed out to me, and to many others many
|times, that we tend to use the term "aril" when in most cases we mean
|"arilbred". There are very few pure arils being grown in most
|gardens....the bulk being arilbreds. I have tried to watch my terminology
|since being corrected by Howard twice.Clarence

That is absolutely right, and worth remembering. The situation was
made much worse by the persistent use of AR in the AIS Bulletin to
refer to arilbreds of 1/2 or more aril ancestry.

And, frankly, I think the complexity of the terminology used by the
Aril Society also added to the confusion. If we had left things at
"aril" and "arilbred", it would be easier to explain and defend those
terms. But the Aril Society has divided these irises into fully 13
subclasses with tongue-twisting names and obscure symbols; it's no
wonder to me that many people who are not aril experts just throw
up their hands and call them all "arils".

FWIW
