Hi Dorothy!
I use Cygon as a drench - to protect the other beasties in my garden... and
protect myself since I have lung problems. Sweet Leonard (my husband - or as
I sometimes call him, "the man I slept with last night") does the mixing and
drenching... he uses one of those large spray canisters you can purchase from
Sears. Voice of experience - buy metal, not plastic. He mixes according to
directions and then, with the hose pointed only inches above the rhizome, he
gives each plant a shot. We do this when the ground is dry. The idea is
that the plant takes it in and becomes, therefore toxic. He does my sibs and
japanese the same way... with maybe more Cygon applied in those cases. The
first application is done when the first tulips bloom - then two more at 10
day intervals. I've noticed no unwanted deaths (ie, worms), and I have
plenty of birds, moles, etc., so I assume that no-one else is suffering.
And, I also hang onto the words of Dr. Hollingworth at a meeting several
years ago... that Cygon is "not a particularly dangerous pesticide".
That's MY story. I had one infestation of the 'dreaded iris borer' - and I
became a believer.
BTW... someone referred to me lately as the "iris horror"
