Chris, I agree the membership should have an explanation for the dues
increase. It is my understanding that this in fact was provided the RVP's in
Nov, so they could alert members, and also allow those wanting to renew
before Jan. 1. Our RVP Anne Lowe got the word out here in Region 4. As a
result many Region 4 people renewed their membership early to come under the
Jan 1 deadline.
No one like to see a dues increase, but the AIS Board had little choice.
Even after adopting various economies, the net operating losses could not be
sustained. Our new AIS Treasurer did a detailed analysis which indicated
immediate action was necessary. RVP's who were present at the Fall Board
Meeting came to this conclusion also.
Like you, I was not happy that it had to be done...no one I know was. Still,
AIS has held dues below other plant societies for a long time, and even with
the increases, AIS dues remain below dues for such other societies as the
Hemerocallis, Hosta and Rose societies. I hope this answers some of your
questions. (I hope you won't regard me like the Persian kings treated the
messangers who reported the Persian armies suffered battle losses...that is,
they cut their heads off...) Best regards, Clarence Mahan
