after seeing several postings about digging plants from the wild i have to
comment - PLEASE don't do this. our native flora, especially attractive,
popular species, has been badly impoverished by collectors. some of these
individual plants take years to grow to maturity and often (as someone
commented) don't survive being transplanted. many species (maybe not iris)
also have complex relationships with soil components. transplanting from
places about to be bulldozed for subdivisions or parking lots is one thing,
but just to get plants from a site where they are well adapted is not a good
idea. either collect a few seeds or buy nursery grown plants. at the very
least, plant back more than you take.
