Iris Seed Germinations

Tom:

I collect Louisiana Iris seed when the pods mature ususally in June and July
in southwest Florida. When pods begin to turn yellow seed are collected
before seeds dry. They are planted in pots of your favorite media. Moist
peat moss works fine for me. Pots of seed are place in a light shady area
and the media is kept moist. You don't have to worry about over watering as
they love it. Seeds begin to germinate and sprout in late September and
October in my area. Louisiana Iris seed do not need cold to break dormancy.

To over come the need for cold to break the germination of Bearded Iris seed,
seed are collected as pods mature. Disinfect the seed to prevent molding in
the chilling process. The seed are place in zip lock bags with moist paper
towel or moist perlite and place in the crisper of the refrigerator. Sixty
to ninety days require to break the dormancy. At sixty days start checking
for sprouting. When you see several seeds germinating, the seeds are ready
and are removed from the ziplock bags and planted in your favorite media.
Media should have excellent drainage. Plant seed about 3 times their
thickness. Germination should continue until completed. Seedlings should be
grown in good light conditions.

These are my experiences with iris seed germination.
