Although my transcription of the text from the Judges' Handbook is
accurate, i.e., the word "iris" is not capitalized, my interpretation of
the intent of the language is that at least one parent of a species cross
must be a member of the Genus Iris in the botanical sense while the other
parent need not be. I think this interpretation of the word "iris" is
consistent with its use throughout the Judges' Handbook. Indeed, one of the
justifications offered for making bulbous irises ineligible for AIS awards
or designation as Best Specimen in Show (other than that AIS does not
register them) is that in some botanical classification systems they are
placed outside the Genus Iris.
