I believe that my difficulty may have been slightly misunderstood.

An iris show has one overriding goal -- display the beauty and
versatility of our chosen flower to the gardening public. Anyone
connected with any given show who possesses the slightest grain of
common sense can deal with problems such as JP.

Common sense breaks down with those few fiercely competitive
individuals who lock horns during a show. In a recent show, two such
individuals tied for the Silver medal. One challenged the other's
ribbon count, insisting that the 'registered but not introduced' (by
AIS Check Lists) ribbon won by his competitor be thrown out.

Much to the chagrin of show officials, the HANDBOOK FOR JUDGES AND
SHOW OFFICIALS gave no loop hole for common sense, and the letter of
the law was reluctantly applied.

It remains for the HANDBOOK's authors (and the AIS Policy chairman)
to reword the HFJASO such that common sense can be used while still
supporting and encouraging the fullest possible compliance with the
AIS registration system. (Failing to inform the AIS Registrar of a
cultivar's introduction is a problem that has plagued the system
since inception.)

Cheers,
