Hi all,
I recently purchased a 'watering wand' which attatches to the hose, and has
an on off switch. The end has a 6" metal part, with holes on the sides of
the tip. This is inserted into the soil, and you water directly to the
plants roots.
I wasn't convinced until I had watered a section of empty garden, then dug
the watered part over to see the results.
I am experimenting with delivering water direct to the roots of my recently
planted TB's. My first attempt was thwarted by heavy rain the next day, so
no observations were possible.
I have had trouble with rot in seedlings because of the intense heat and
humidity. The water tends to soak only into the upper layer of soil and sits
around the rz. I figured that watering 6" deep would be much more effective
in preventing rot, and promoting deeper rooting. (all these rz have newly
established roots at least 6" long because they were started in pots.)
I too, find that rain water is much more beneficial than town water
(chlorinated). The rain water soaks in better, and a cool respite usually
follows, rather than the intense heat that follows morning watering.
Interesting thread.
Cheers, Jan
