Show judging is in part about the cultivation of the iris and in part about
the showmanship of the exhibitor. Part of showmanship sometimes involves
luck, like cutting the show stalks the evening before the hail storm. It also
involves things like protecting potential show stalks in the garden to
prevent wind and rain damage.
Again I would hold with some leniency at the initial ribbon level, and little
or none at The Queen's Court level. My judging experience shows that stalks
are more often down graded by poor showmanship than poor cultivation. One
aspect that is quite frustrating is when the exhibitor doesn't seem to know
what the front of the stalk is and presents the exhibit with its back to the
judges.
