What do you consider the front of the stalk? I did not know that they had sides. Is it the side the light is strongest on and the flowers tend to face that direction? or does it have to do with the direction the rhizome faces?
Obviously I have not shown any flowers.

Show judging is in part about the cultivation of the iris and in part about 
the showmanship of the exhibitor. Part of showmanship sometimes involves 
luck, like cutting the show stalks the evening before the hail storm. It also 
involves things like protecting potential show stalks in the garden to 
prevent wind and rain damage. 
Again I would hold with some leniency at the initial ribbon level, and little 
or none at The Queen's Court level.  My judging experience shows that stalks 
are more often down graded by poor showmanship than poor cultivation. One 
aspect that is quite frustrating is when the exhibitor doesn't seem to know 
what the front of the stalk is and presents the exhibit with its back to the 
judges.
