Steve, you mention OYEZ. There were a number of diploid aril x 2n
beardeds produced in the early days of C. G. White's work, Oyez being
one of them. They are all as sterile as they can be except in the
rare occasions when the production of ova ends up with all the
chromosomes. WILLIAM MOHR did that rather often, but Oyez apparently
does not. I don't know how many blossoms of Oyez I pollinated over
the years while still in Idaho (using half-aril C. G. White
tetraploids mostly)and never got a single seed. It's worth a try if
you don't hold your breath. If you want seedlings, however, see
below.
As to crossing diploid pure arils with diploid beardeds, 'taint worth
your time. C. G. White abandoned that approach early and went on
once there were half-aril tetraploids available. I would suggest if
you want results is to go on from where other breeders of half and
three-quarter 4n arilbreds have already built a foundation. There's
some fantastic stuff out there, good growers in hospitable climates
and highly fertile. Good luck with your project!
