OT: weather, old farmers forcast

Hi
While those in the Northern Hemisphere are suffering from unusual cold we have the opposite problem. Adelaide has just broken it's January record for the longest stretch of days over 35oC (95F) 16 days, and the same expected today. In the far North of the state it's been over 40oC every day this month. In the Hills here we've had a few days when a sea breeze has snuck around the back of the hills and cooled things down a bit and we usually get cooler nights than in Adelaide. However yesterday it rained and thundered, and more is expected today. We often get a bit in early Jan but other than a La Nina year that's it till about April. However all the indicators were there for a continuation of La Nina and following the advice from an old farmer we were given we were expecting rain in about a week or so but not just yet. So guess who hadn't got the Surflan on yet.My husband works off the property in the mornings and by the afternoon when it's 38C (100F) or so and "brain baking" hot and dry, it's a bit difficult to go and spray because you think it might rain soon.
So why do we think it will rain in early Feb?

When we moved up here we were told by locals, " if you get a fog, it will rain in 3 days or 3 months". I thought "Big deal, it's always foggy in autumn and winter and rains in winter and spring". However a year or so later we got fogs in Dec (extremely unusual) so I marked it on the calender and sure enough it rained in March. The November before last we had heavy fogs in November and it rained in Feb (6 inches). Last Nov we had a week of heavy fogs in early Nov wiith a number of odd fogs up until Xmas so I've been saying for the last week, it's time to get the Surflan on, and it was. Hopefully if we can spray this weekend when the weather will be a lot cooler we can stop some of the weed germination.
