Re: weather
Just a ray of hope for all you who've been freezing back East.
Here in central NM it's about 67F (I think about 15 degrees above average)
today, and I had my first flowers of Iris reticulata and Crocus openning in
the yard yesterday. There were newly hatched butterflies flying around,
along with Honey Bees, beetles, wasps, flies, etc. etc. There is Forsythia
and Winter Jasmine flowering all over town, the air is full of Siberian Elm
pollen (big sneeze), and the Japanese Quince will probably be opening by
the end of the week. The flower buds on the Callery Pears and Plums are
big and round, but not ready to open quite yet. Saw a Globe Willow with
little green leaves all over it yesterday too. All about a month early.
Sure is getting spring-like now. Tempted to thank you all out East for
your sacrifice, because I suspect your awfull weather and our great weather
are related (after all, it was the other way round last year). Hope it
doesn't decide that winter really does exist in the west now too! I've
even got a few, left over young flower stalks on my 'Eleanor Roosevelt'
from last year's rebloom, that may go ahead and open a few flowers, if it
doesn't get too cold again. All the Iris are showing new growth now,
including various types of bearded, spuria, "Spanish", and I.
missouriensis.
