No! Never!
It's a term that was a part of the Internet when I came on line in 1997. Long before I became a part of this list going into 1999. Another term I saw at that time was 'lofters' but it did not grow in popularity as did 'lurkers' and may have only been popular in the writing groups I frequented at that time.

FWIW : The term "lurker" was used on the Intranets before they were interfaced into the Internet. Shorthand for phases such as For What Its Worth helped when text messages were were limited to 256 charecters...

I don't recall any answer to Linda M's question other than the phrase "Stop hogging the net".

"lofter" or e-lurker are certainly nicer words.
