No!  Never! 

It's a term that was a part of the Internet when I came on line in 1997.  
Long before I became a part of this list going into 1999. Another term I saw at 
that time was 'lofters' but it did not grow in popularity as did 'lurkers' and 
may have only been popular in the writing groups I frequented at that time.
