10. Can I register my cell phone on the National Do Not Call Registry?

Yes, you may place your personal cell phone number on the National Do Not
Call Registry. The registry has accepted cell phone numbers since it opened
for registrations in June 2003. There is no deadline to register a home or
cell phone number on the Registry.

You may have received an email telling you that your cell phone is about to
be assaulted by telemarketing calls as a result of a new cell phone number
database; however, that is not the case. FCC regulations prohibit
telemarketers from using automated dialers to call cell phone numbers.
Automated dialers are standard in the industry, so most telemarketers don't
call consumers on their cell phones without their consent.

So, as I said previously, the message forwarded by Rosalie is in error.
FWIW, Both my land lines are registered (though I never had a problem as the
numbers are not listed) as are my two cell phones and Lynne's cell phone,
though we had never experienced any problems on those lines as well.

The WMF exploit I mentioned in my reply is much, much more serious. If you
are running Windows, you are vulnerable. This was published on
http://isc.sans.org/ at 9 AM EST this morning:

According to F-Secure's blog today, the 2nd generation WMF exploit has been
spammed and "When the HappyNewYear.jpg hits the hard drive and is accessed
(file opened, folder viewed, file indexed by Google Desktop), it executes
and downloads a Bifrose backdoor (detected by us as
Backdoor.Win32.Bifrose.kt) from www[dot]ritztours.com.".

The link to the blog is http://www.f-secure.com/weblog/.

Again, your best defense is to check you're a/V for updates several times a
day, and unregister the affected DLL.

I saw an announcement about this while browsing the National Do Not Call
Registry yesterday. I may not have the name of the site exactly right, but
a
Google search should pick it up. The "Registry" is what I recall with more
certainty, but I have an increasingly fallible memory for things, it seems.

Rosalie had it right. It is urgent business. I just got our home phone
back
on the list--it dropped off in October, and the inconvenient calls at dinner
time got bad enough I got on-line and found out how to get back on for
another
five years. NC uses the National list, rather than having one of its own.
