I use plastic pots, in full sun, and Miracle 
  Grow potting soil.   Some get late afternoon shade.   They grew for me in the ground, but didn't bloom well until I put them into pots because the roots get colder in pots, I think.   I don't bury the pots.

SDBs and MTBs don't do well for me here, partly because of gravel,
partly summer heat. I've tried some in pots of regular soil in part
shade in the past with even worse success.

years been growing the Willott's
SDB and MDB irises in pots because they grow and
bloom better in pots here in hot Texas. Last year I exibited the only
MDB most of the FW Iris Society had ever seen.
It got a blue ribbon too.
