Linda, my best results transplanting new seedlings is after they have 4-5 leaves
and are at least 4" tall.
By this time *most* of the seeds in the batch/pot that are going to germinate have
done so, so I carefully
remove the entire soil ball and carefully break it apart so as not to damage tiny
roots. The time you
may lose letting them reach this size can be made up by fertilizing with
miracle-gro after they have been
transplanted. Mike Greenfield moves them earlier with few losses. I dont know what
he does differently,
but his climate is the same and he transplants into the same 4" pots I do.
