Re: Re: HYB: successes & failures

Linda I move them when they are less than one inch tall with only one root and leaf. But it is at a time when I have lots of sun and warmth. I don't think I have lost more than 1 %. I have a few that rot after they get 4 or 5 leaves. I don't even know what damping off looks like.

How long does it take for them to die? It might be the temps and light causing the problem. Both of which should trigger growth. With out the temps and lights they just sit there waiting for them. With no rhizome for a reserve to back them up they die. Just a guess.

Linda, my best results transplanting new seedlings is after they have 4-5 leaves
and are at least 4" tall.
By this time *most* of the seeds in the batch/pot that are going to germinate have
done so, so I carefully
remove the entire soil ball and carefully break it apart so as not to damage tiny
roots. The time you
may lose letting them reach this size can be made up by fertilizing with
miracle-gro after they have been
transplanted. Mike Greenfield moves them earlier with few losses. I dont know what
he does differently,
but his climate is the same and he transplants into the same 4" pots I do.

Very discouraged at the moment. Best germination rate I've ever had,
super healthy looking seedlings, and nearly 100% mortality in all
crosses moved to bigger pots one afternoon.
