holding the standards rigid in the 'normal' iris.  
 
Many irises have open or even floppy standards.  It would seem that  the 
flats might be just a further exaggeration or relaxing of this  characteristic.  
But, of course, the question is whether something is added  in or taken out.  
 
Of course, you say there is a correlation between the flat tendency and  
sterility.  So maybe there is more there than what meets the eyes.  
 
Again, I've not studied the flat irises at all.  But most of my irises  
contain both male and female parts in the same plant!  <vbg>
