I meant missing, as in the chemical component (or gene) responsible for
holding the standards rigid in the 'normal' iris.
Many irises have open or even floppy standards. It would seem that the
flats might be just a further exaggeration or relaxing of this characteristic.
But, of course, the question is whether something is added in or taken out.
Of course, you say there is a correlation between the flat tendency and
sterility. So maybe there is more there than what meets the eyes.
---And the beards on the standards of flats, and I've read that where standards and falls have different colors or patterns, the flats will be all falls, or sometimes intermediate.
I know there are some TBs that have a thin beard at the bases of their standards.
And the regelia and regeliabreds and oncogelias can all have scimpy beards on their standards. But the flat iris have full beards on all 6 petals generally, right?
Again, I've not studied the flat irises at all. But most of my irises
contain both male and female parts in the same plant!
---Isn't that convenient?
