I thought about the carpenter's apron sort of thing for hybridizing, but really thought the ideal thing would be the kind of tray that cigarette girls used to carry. Unfortunately, they seem to have gone out with cigarettes, or with cigarette girls, whichever. Then, happily, I chanced upon a dandy little plastic fishing tackle box, 9 1/2" tall x 9 1/2" wide x 6 1/2" deep. The top flips open easily for a top storage compartment that carries tweezers, tags, marking pens, measuring tape, plastic ties, scissors, etc. The clear plastic front flips down for access to two slide-out trays with multiple dividers, just right for carrying pollen containers, and a bottom compartment spacious enough for a camera and more. The two sides and the back are opaque, so contents are shielded from the sun on three sides. Since I do much of my garden work, including pollinating, using a portable bench to save my knees, the tackle box sits conveniently at hand on the ground. I got mine at (dare I say it?) Walmart. -- Griff

I use a sturdy clipboard that has a compartment under the board which holds tags, pens, markers, scissors, packaged alcohol wipes, small spiral note pad latex gloves, tweezers etc. and it does not open accidentally. I purchased mine at Staples Office Supply. I believe most office supply stores carry a selection of such clipboards. I would suggest looking for one with two metal clips that hold the unit shut as the plastic ones seem to open too easily for me. I have had mine for about ten years and I love it. It will hold my tiny Cassio camera too but I tend to get debris in the clipboard as I travel further and open the board more so I opt for "fanny pack" type storage for it.

I'm hoping this new Clipcase will allow me to carry some of my pre-season notes right into the beds with me. But I'm already starting to rethink it! Looks like it might be easy to dump the whole thing!
