I feel I must apologize to Paul publically because if I understood an e-mail
he sent me privately Plantsteps is much different than my understanding. Mia
Culpa. I try to be somewhat savy of what is out on the internet. One of the
trends I have seen, is plant sites starting up that want to represent all
plants. When I look at them, I see the same information that is already in
place on Dave's Garden that was simply pirated. It makes me sad that these
sites just take the information from another site and make it seem like they
did the hard work of assembling it. It must drive the authors of Dave's Garden
Wild. But it seems the internet is sort of like the wild west and you can do
whatever you want.

I hope people will forgive me for jumping to the conclusion that plantsteps
might be the same. I have a high respect for Daves Garden because he was doing
for all plants what the Iris Society should have been doing in the same time
period for Iris. We are Late in coming to the internet, it is not easy for
plant societies to change. This us understandable because they have been
providung the information for many years and did not see the need to move into
new technologies. Daves Garden had the luxury of not having the history of
hard wotk in creating the information that exists. But The word is out and
many specialist plant societies are beginning to provide what they have been
doing in this new media. Societies have many advantages, they have the
information, expertize, and are not in it for profit. But They also are poor
at developing a revenue source that can hire the experts to do the computer
work that is outside of plant knowledge. Almost everything we do is because
members with some knowledge have volunteered their services. It is
questionable whether if we charged for what things should cost members would
actually pay for it. I know that if I charged for my services the society
would be bankrupt. but I do not and others give freely also. Somehow we create
something larger than ourselves and get stisfaction from seeing others value
our efforts.

>To those that worry about Paul and I disagreeing I want to asure them that I
have a very high respect for Paul and though we have never met I know about
much of what he has done with the Iris society and believe Paul is a very fine
person. I try to express my opinions wheter they always are in agreement or
not and I am not always very eloquent in doing so. It may be that we may reach
some common ground but I need to be convinced that if we did anything it would
be a win win situation for everyone. Paul and I can continue talking off the
forum.

oranges.

anytime Rita (or anyone else), warranted or not. That is what this group is
for... open discussion. Rita you are also a valued memeber of AIS

>And he hasn't contacted you because I have not been told where it is (or
didn't see it that I can find). Someone else gave me the link and I
registered. Even looking at it now, I still would have suggested a
collaboration. I had proposed the idea to him and asked the needed questions
for him. He is not a member of AIS (as yet that I'm aware of) so him
contacting AIS is unlikely considering his past experiences with plant
socities and their being uncooperative. Until now this discussion was going
the same direction. From your writings so far you were not willing to
consider a collaboration as he might be stealing info so there was no need for
him to contact you, right? From your writings now this is your first attempt
at reconciling a cooperative effort... and Thank you, Robert and all those
participating.

>>I am willing to discuss cooperation with anyone including plant steps, after
all I am taking the time to have this discussion with you. I have invited
everyone in this forum to go to the wiki and see it as it is being built. you
do so by clicking on this link:http://wiki.irises.org/bin/view Several members
of this forum have been already contributing mightily to wiki for at least a
month and we now have 4,000 Irises with pages.I am amazed at how you have been
telling my how the wiki does not do what you want when you have not even seen
it. If your friend in plantsteps wishes to talk why has not he contacted me?
