Native Irises

Sometime ago, I complained about the lack of distribution information on
the native irises of North America. I have since learned that I was
ignorant of a number of websites that provide detailed county
distribution for many states - Florida, Utah, Arkansas, for example.

I have now discovered a further level of ignorance on my part. The USDA
provides a detailed listing of all plants with maps showning the states
in which those plants occur. This site also provides a list of synonyms
and a somewhat poor literature listing. It is a tremendous source of
information for anyone interested in plants, including irises.

Your can see it at

http://trident.ftc.nrcs.udsa.gov//plants/plntmenu.html

simply click on genus and then type in iris and all will be revealed.

The USDA should be congratulated on this site. It even has a "comments"
section for messages back to their office. My only criticism is that
there are no pictures (yet). I have also found a few errors in my
initial scan - for example, virginica is abundant in north Florida but
not shown as occuring in the State.
