Until now, with the exception of Wilma Vallette who suggested in her book
that seeds be frozen in the freezer for 10 days, I have not heard of an iris
breeder who freezes seed. Carl Jorgensen in The World of Irises wrote that
seeds should be treated just above freezing. Other iris breeders I've heard
talk about this have said the same thing. When I tried freezing the seed as
an experiment I got poor germination.
But I learned long ago that one person can succeed with a gardening method
that others fail at. In fact, I have myself at times gone against
established lore and had great success (for a while at least). Walther
Moores et al say freezing is o.k. So, if putting iris seeds in the freezer
works for you, by all means do it. As for me, I shall continue planting in
pots left outside during winter, or putting the seed in mois spaghnam moss in
the vegetable drawer of the fridge for 12 weeks..both techniqes have been
quite successful for me. Clarence Mahan in VA
