Graham, my understanding is that I. setosa var. arctica is distinct from I.
setosa subsp canadensis, and that it is just canadensis which should now
properly be known as I. hookerii.
Please let us know what Anne says about this. The real issue, though, is
whether the taxonomists will recognize this. After a Japanese botanist
effectly proved that the name I. ensata (Thunberg) took precedence over the
name I. kaempferi (Siebold) in the 1920's, it took the taxonomists close to
50 years to acknowledge this. Had they done so earlier, there would be much
