They did, John. Have you seen Redoute's Les Liliacees? Granted, it dates
back to 1816, but the irises he drew and painted in watercolor are gorgeous!
There is a beautiful book of prints reproducing the origninal watercolors
entitled A Redoute Treasury, with text by Peter and Frances Mallary.
Unfortunately, some of the irises are indentified incorrectly, e.g. Iris
pallida is called "I. flavissima". Another book with Retdoute iris prints is
P. J. Redoute, Lilies and Related Flowers (London 1982). The text in this
book is by Brian Mathew, and thus superior to the other book, but the prints
