I have noticed previous mention in postings about damage to iris plantings
caused by wild animals - gophers, rabbits, deer, etc. Recent postings with
reference to the feline fraternity remind me that hereabouts, any animal
damage experienced has been at the paws of domestic, rather than wild,
animals. Cats have not caused direct damage to iris, but if our dog spots a
strange cat in the yard, she immediately gives chase, and if the pursuit
traverses an iris bed during or shortly before bloom season, stalks go
flying to the left and right as a consequence (dogs can be SO clumsy).
The neighborhood barn cats do like to hold their rumbles in one of my
perennial beds with resulting collateral damage, such as a Hosta torn to
shreds, or a lily stalk in full bloom broken off at the base. If we want to
talk about big time animal damage, I may share my steer story sometime, if
the gory details would not be considered too gruesome for public
consumption.
