A timely question for us. The Central Arkansas Iris Society is just now
pulling together materials for a comprehensive history of our group which
we hope to have ready for our 40th anniversary in ... I'm not sure which
will be our anniversary year, '98 or '99, but the club officers know. I
understand Tom Dillard, M.D. Faith, Henry Rowlan, Gertie Butler and other
stalwarts have saved minutes, back issues of the newsletter and programs
from our functions, which include an annual garden tour, our garden on the
lawn of the State Capitol, our own show and participation in general flower
shows, a rhizome sale and our monthly meetings. Apparently CAIS has always
attracted packrat-type folks with a passion for boxing up scraps of paper.
The society has also been mentioned occasionally in local newspapers, so we
have good sources.
Our history is to include interviews with senior members. I am told I will
publish these "pioneer bios" in our newsletter.
Our president Lucie Burley is working with a board member to organize what
we have. If there's enough material, I hope we'll make a booklet of it.
We've only just this year undertaken the project, so I don't expect we'll
have our history written quickly. But Linda, if it makes you feel more
hopeful, Lucie tells me going through the old materials is big fun. She's
not feeling oppressed at all.
