HYB: Fertility of First Bloom

Hi there:

Hoping some of our hybridizing experts on the iris-l have some input 
on this:

In two different early iris sources (British, circa 1920), there was 
mention that the first flower to bloom on each plant will be 
infertile.  I have never read this in anything more recent.  Can you 
tell me if this is an old wives' tale.....?
