REF: synonyms

I have to wonder if the use of synonymous names is why that some
plants often end up as being misnamed. For those that may remember the
thread, in Kentucky, I got hold of a plant that was being sold as STATEN
ISLAND. It turned out to be LORELEY.
I have heard that several unreputable dealers have been taking
properly named Daylilies and selling them under a "house" name. It stands
to reason that the same thing could have happened with Irises. Then again,
maybe not?
I would be interested in hearing how the practice of synonymous names
came to be. That may assist those of us that look up this type of
information for others, so hopefully, incorrect information doesn't
accidentally get posted again.
