Yes, Barb, you will get some 'awkward, gawky' children along with
some good ones as is the case in all bearded iris crosses. If you
follow the definition of an IB strictly, it should be a cross of a SDB X a
TB or a BB. However, I have seen a few registrations involving SDB X TB
being registered as BB because of the larger flower and perhaps the timing
of the bloom season. IB's are supposed to bloom between the SDB's and the
TB's, but I have had some bloom before SDB's and with the TB's, so the
bloom time by definition is not etched in stone. FANTASTIC BLUE comes to
mind as an IB that doesn't always cooperate in the height department. The
flowers are rather large, but more often than not, it blooms short, and,
therefore, is not in proportion. I keep it because I enjoy the patterning
on the hafts. FB is one you will either love or hate. It may also be used
for erosion problems as it is such a rampant grower, good on slopes or
gullies! Ideally, an IB's bloom should be larger than an SDB but smaller
than a TB or BB, and the height from about 15" to 27", all in proportion.
A large flower looks funny on 15" stalk, and a small flower may look funny
on a 27" stalk.
