Setosa growing conditions - Question.

I would sure appreciate it if some of you who are successfully
growing I. setosa would share the conditions under which you
have it planted. Several attempts I have made to grow it where
the soil was well drained have been failures. The plants lasted
at the most, about 3 years before they simply failed to come
back in the spring.

At one time I dug beside a wild plant to try to get a feel for what
it needed. The rhizome was about 2 to 3 inches under a heavy mat
of organic material - mostly grass roots and such. From 3 to about
12 inches the roots passed through a mixture of grass roots and soil
that was wet, sometimes flooded, but aerated. At 12 to 15 inches the
roots disappeared into what can only be characterised as "muck" that
never drains, thus no aeration. At about 18 inches I stopped digging
because the hole kept filling with water, but the roots obviously went
deeper.

Any information would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Duane
