Hi Jim,
Well since your not hand pollinating then yourself, a good year for you
would be when there's plenty of bees flying around that are pollinating
them.
The only way for your bearded iris to form a seed pod is for some pollen
to be transferred to the stigmatic lip. Some of us here cross breed these
things, so we take the anther or pollen stem from one flower and go to
another
flower that looks like it would make some beautiful babies, apply the
pollen
to the lip which is above the beard, within 10 days you should have a pod
forming.
Keep track of cross, Mother X Father.
You'll be making your own crosses next year once you figure out where the
anther
(pollen stem) and the stigmatic lip are.
No fire engine reds yet.
Plenty of oranges around, just look in any iris catalog.
