Betty Schnellinger Western NY Zone 5
In our smaller gardens, we have reduced the numbers of Japanese beetles
somewhat by eliminating the earliest ones each year. We make the rounds
with a bowl of sudsy water which we hold directly below the beetles. Then we
just brush the beetles into the water where they drown. If you're finicky
about touching them, just shake the leaf a bit and they will drop right into
the bowl. Performing this patrol duty for a week or two, I don't really
remember how long it takes, really does reduce their numbers, for that
season anyway.
Our climate is too cold for milky spore disease to be effective. Hope the
above tips help anyone who is, like us, reluctant to use high-power
chemicals in their home gardens.
