Here in Phoenix, Arizona, most iris growers SHAVE the roots prior to
planting in the fall. Now, I do not want to get into another heated debate
over SHAVE or NOT SHAVE roots here.
The point I am expressing is the roots are shaved and planted in the fall so
they can grow NEW roots before winter.
Bloomout rhizomes I have observed seemed to have missed their calling and
grew either few roots, or none at all.
I hope that explains where I was coming from when I expressed the bloomouts
I observed did not have many or any roots.
Now, I just want to add that yesterday I dug a couple one year clumps (or 9
month clumps to be exact) of unknown irises in my garden. One of them which
had a rhizome the size of a sweet potato and had sent up two bloom stalks
off that one rhizome had three increases, and no new roots...go figure. I
also had another rhizome that gave two bloomstalks called COURT MARSHALL.
It gave me two increases and only had ONE root on it. Of course, all the
increases had roots.
