Mine have survived (tho haven't thrived) with total neglect here -
growing conditions are gravelly, somewhat organic soil, lots of grass
and weeds in a fence row, no water during drought, fairly high natural
fertility, pH probably near neutral, maybe some occasional fertilizer,
bonemeal, or ground limestone.  I see them growing semi-wild in
limestone outcrop areas, and if Donald Eaves keeps them alive in Texas,
they must like heat and drought.
