Hi Amy. I can't help you very much, except to say that I am potting as much
as i can, and begging old pots from everyone. I have the advantage of only
an hours drive to the new place, and will still be working in this town, so
my move will be many trailer loads of pots, which will be stored on my
friends property next door to where i currently live.
I would be interested to know how your shift goes, as it may be roughly the
same time of year as ours (late summer). I was planning to lift large clumps
and carry them loose, in the trailer.

Re amending your soil: It sounds like your new soil will be similar to what
I am leaving behind. I am going from hot dry, zone 9 with poor top soil, to
cooler zone 8, with lovely rich volcanic loam. (potato growing country)
I have very little top soil here, and usually start new beds by putting down
a thick layer of newspaper, thick pads of alfalfa hay, and cover the whole
lot with a generous (8" or so) layer of topsoil, brought in by the trailer
load.
If you can't brring in top soil, use what you have, mixed with sand. The
lucerne is magic for growing irises, and encouraging worms to your garden.
Even using it as a surface mulch will help improve the soil underneath.
What is caliche? I have never heard this term before.
Cheers, Jan Clark, in Australia
