On the 'coldzonegardens list' people were trying to identify an
old historic MTB variegata iris that is still commonly grown in
Alberta, Canada. I have grown the same or a very similar iris
here in NW Ontario for twenty years. I found this iris where it
had been growing in sod for many years at an abandoned
homesite.
I posted a photo of my old MTB variegata on Iris-Photos at:
http://www.hort.net/lists/iris-photos/jul00/msg00009.html
One member of the 'coldzone list' recently checked out Bill
Shear's "The Gardener's Iris Book" from his local library. He said
that a photo on page 13 showed the same historic MTB variegata
iris that he and others were growing in Alberta. The name of the
iris in Bill Shear's book was WELCH'S REWARD.
A couple days later I was looking over Chuck Chapman's catalog for
this year. On page 23 of Chapman's Catalog, under MTB (Miniature
Tall Bearded) Chuck lists - "4.50 WELCH'S REWARD (Welch
'1988)M 22" YellowS: red-purpleF w/yl edge HM AM WW."
This would imply that WELCH'S REWARD is a much more modern
introduction than the old MTB variegata that is still common in
Canada.
I wondered if Bill or Chuck or anyone else who grows WELCH'S
REWARD could verify whether WR is fairly modern? And could you
define what was improved in WR that sets it apart from similar
historic irises? Is there a story that goes with the naming of
this iris? Any photos of WC on the web?
Thanks for your help,
