Re: CULT: Iris in tropics

Mike from northern Louisiana called me tonight. He was asking if I
knew what TB iris might grow in Hawaii, his relatives who live in Hawaii
want to try some iris and were looking for suggestions. I relayed my
knowledge of one trip I had to Hawaii; I don't recall seeing a single
bearded iris growing. My understanding is that the temperatures don't drop
enough to simulate a cold season. I suggested that they inquire around the
islands to see if anyone there knows.
I couldn't get into the archives tonight, so I apologize for not
looking back for discussion previously on this topic. My question is, does
anyone know of certain iris types or varieties that might be worth trying in
the Hawaii lowlands for more than one season? (on some of the higher
elevations of the volcanic mountains I would think would get cool seasons; I
remember snow up on top.) I'll pass on your answers to Mike.
I suppose one could just purchase rhizomes for Hawaii and grow for one
season only... after flowering, just throw it away. Some people do that
with tulips.
Thanks.
Kitty Loberg, northern Calif.
