John Jones,
Per your request regarding parentage.
I just completed a three year project where we started from scratch.
Designed and built a relational database for the the daylily registrar.
Then had 67 volunteers use a special program I designed for data entry. We
then had an army of proofreaders. Next week we will publish our second
edition of the Electronic Checklist of Daylily Registrations with over
48,000 cultivars having complete data. The anticpated cost of CD is $25.
Below are the instructions I sent for entering the parentage into the data
entry program used by our data entry volunteers. There are 14 different
fields for entering parentage. The bracketing is performed automatically by
the program and completed in a 15th field. For parentage that does not
confirm to this standard then it is entered manually in a 16th field.
This allows a parentage search of the database for cultivars using any
particular cultivar parent. Also allows for search of a cultivar that was
solely used as either a pollen or pod parent. You can even go deeper in see
if it is in the background of seedling.
Hope this helps you in dealing with the parentage questions you have
relating to the Iris Registration Database
Respectfully,
Bobby Baxter

=====================
SPECIAL NOTES RELATING TO THE PARENTAGE SCREEN: The pod parent is always
listed first and always appears to the left of the big X. The pollen parent
is always listed second and appears to the right of the big X.
The bracketing is automatically inserted for you when you enter the parents
in the correct boxes. It is not necessary for you to manually type any of
the cultivar's names. They should all be in the drop down menu box on the
parentage screen. Open the drop down menu by clicking on the arrow. Then
start typing the name of the plant you are looking for. When you see the
correct plant you are looking for then click on it. Then double click in
the appropriate box where you want the name inserted. After you enter an
acceptable combination, the parentage will appear at the top of the screen.
Whenever you encounter the word "seedling" or "sdlg" you are to manually
enter "sdlg" without the quotes.
You must also manually type the word "TETRA" whenever you encounter this
from the printed check list.
See the examples below to tell you how to enter all the possible
combinations.
For example if the parentage is: [IDA'S MAGIC X (WEDDING BAND x PAPER
BUTTERFLY)] then Box 1= IDA'S MAGIC, Box 9= WEDDING BAND, Box 10 = PAPER
BUTTERFLY
This is important and may be confusing at first. If you have any questions
please call Bobby or Gretchen Baxter for assistance at 919-217-1961 or
919-217-7670.
See the following examples for the correct method to enter Pod and Pollen
Parentage.

The step after that is to get the parentage
into a format that can be used by a genealogy program so you can do
parentage searches and family trees. (And no I don't have any ideas
about how to do that yet - and think about the problem of the same cv
being both mother and father in different trees)
The search engine continues to be upgraded so that it is faster.
If you would like a different policy, let the AIS board know. I am up
for it.
