Re: Re: HYB: Seed Developement

Last year I made 30 crosses and only got one pod. We had had a warm dry spring and about the first of April the temperature went into the 90's. This year We had a cool, wetter than normal March and early April. I made about 60 crosses and got 28 pods. The temperature went into the 90's about the 15th of April and nothing I tried to cross after that took. The stamens were dry when the blossoms opened. IMO that temperatures above 90 F. kill the pollen. What it does to the stigmatic lip I don't know.

  Hi all,
May I ask a favor of the iris-talk? Could everyone who experienced the situation cgdawn references please document the environmental conditions 30 days prior and running through their iris hybridizing season. How did your irises winter? Were they subject to any weather related stress that they weren't subject to in prior years? Perhaps we all could learn something. Document average temperatures and extreme temperatures. Perhaps there were ozone days? Perhaps it was really humid? Document rainfall, did it rain soon after the hybridized cross was made? Will be happy to gather the facts and try to document a consensus situation. Thank you.

made this last spring. Although I'm just an amateur at hybridizing,
I was really surprised at only getting 12 takes out of 30 crosses here
in zone 5, near St. Louis, Mo. Had for the last 2 years gotten many,
many takes for my efforts. Not to wish bad luck on anyone but am
happy to know it was not me that was at fault. However, it is not
harvest time here just yet and really don't know what to expect
in seed count. Will be thankful for any I get.

      Warmest regards,
