I would go further than this. Seems a little strange (disingenuous
even?)to have any Dykes Medal winners on the 'symposium' ballot in
the first place. Listings of the American Dykes' winners are easily
found in several places and the Wistar Medal winners and the Dykes
Medal winners are campaigned for years prior to their selections.

And as Walter said in his post, not all the 'older ones' grow well in
all parts of the country. Yes, STEPPING OUT and DUSKY CHALLENGER grow
well here. But many 'modern' cultivars that are more worthy also do
well, IMHO.

I live in a region comprised of the 6 New England states with many
USDA growing zones and weather types..seacoast to mountainous. We are
a region of well-known Siberian/Japanese iris hybridizers and
fanciers. Many of our members don't grow modern TB cultivars since
they have been disappointed numerous times and it gets expensive to
plant and watch them go to hort. heaven. I do order TB intros each
year since I became an AIS judge (goes with the territory ;-).

Cheers,

Ellen (after all these years still trying to understand the reason
for the AIS to send the entire membership a ballot of Tall Bearded
cultivars tucked into the July Bulletin envelope. We have heard this
discussed ad infinitum/nauseum. BUT I remain supportive of the
admittedly slow-moving AIS having seen what they have to grapple with
in their deliberations.)
